Fit Kit

Ministry Does Fitness with Primark

Ministry Of Sound in London with it's epic club nights has been making people move since the 90s.  Now it has upped the action with the launch of a new slick gym space called, (no not Ministry Of Fit) Ministry Does Fitness. It has a variety of strength, cardio and yoga classes, a banging playlist (naturally) and a bar that offers a lot more than just protein shakes.

Skinny Prosecco

I took to The Arches to experience it's Ministry Of Sweat to test out the new Primark fit kit which is summery, pretty, affordable and, as I thoroughly road tested, can handle sweat in its stride.  Exercising has become the new clubbing for fitness enthusiasts like me, if only there were more bachelors to buy my Lucozades.

Primark Fitness Clothing

During the strengthening circuit class my Primark fit kit passed a few of my all important tests: the supportive test; my sports bra fit correctly and my little bumps stayed put.

Bear Crawls Primark

The squat test; leggings didn't fall down when I was bear crawling, squatting and running so my underwear stayed well and truly, underwear.

And the stretch test: comfortable to wear and flex in.

Shoulder stretch Primark

Great class, nice clothing and fun with all my mates. Who fancies a gym and tonic?

The Beginners Guide To Aerial Yoga

Anti-Gravity or Aerial Yoga uses silk hammocks to support your body and suspend you in mid air allowing you to do challenging stretches you’ve never done before.  It’s like being a trapeze artist without the threat of plummeting to your death in front of a large crowd of people, which is good with me.

Dancer Pose Yoga

I absolutely loved my first Aerial Yoga class at The London Dance Academy and so thought I’d share my 4-step guide to aerial yoga for beginners. Get ready to fly!

STEP 1. Don’t Eat Or Drink Within 2 Hours Before Class

In class you’ll be twisting, turning, hanging upside down, swinging and literally spreading your legs. Avoid feeling queasy by taking it easy on the food before class.

Standing Splits Aerial Yoga

STEP 2. Sit Back

Postures that look like they’re not of great benefit are doing more than you think. My favourite one was the chair pose which is said to help relieve lower back pain and improve posture.

Chair Pose Aerial Yoga

 STEP 3. Try Every Posture

It’s easy to look at certain demonstrations and doubt that you’d be able to do it but you shouldn’t feel intimidated. Moves that look intricate to begin with are quite often the postures that you find yourself in seconds later as the teacher takes you through them step-by-step. There’s a lot of room for progression and poses that you find difficult on the floor become much easier in the hammock. I mean just check out my upside down dancer pose; I couldn’t do this on the floor!

4. Don’t Be Afraid To Let Go

There were certainly times in class that I strongly doubted that the harness was going to be able to carry my 10.5 stones of body weight and instead rip the ceiling down.  I like to take the roof off when DJing but when it’s your body mass that’s responsible it’s just embarrassing.  Thankfully, the harness is designed to hold up to 2000lbs in weight which is the equivalent to 10 baby elephants, though holding any more than 4 elephants at a time means the range of positions they can do is extremely limited. So as the Frozen princess sings: Let It Go!

Anti-gravity yoga

So there you have it. A class great for your body, mind and Instagram feed. Happy Swinging.

Top 5 Buddy Workout Benefits

Like most people, I can quickly become bored when doing the same fitness routines over and over, so my secret to keeping on track is to opt for fun ways to stay active that never really feel like working out. A great and very simple way to achieve this, is by working out with a friend.

Buddy workout Tasha Greene

According to research from go ahead! we’re 74% more likely to stay on track with our fitness goals if we do them with a friend. Because of this, the team at go ahead! has teamed up with a squad of fitness and wellness experts (including little ol' me) for their go ahead! Summer Buddy Project.

The project encourages people to ‘buddy up’, to help make sure they stay motivated to keep on track with their healthy intentions. With this in mind, here are my top five buddy workout benefits:

1. More motivation to get up and go if you're meeting a friend

You're less likely to cancel on your mate for a fit date than cancel on the gym if no-one is there to meet you. Nobody likes a flake (unless it's literally made out of chocolate).

workout buddies

2. You get more out of your workout

A bit of friendly competition helps you push each other to stretch your limits. You're more likely to do an extra rep or run a little faster with your friend.

3. Train together, stay together

Exercise can actually create a greater bond between you and your friend (catch up on all the gossip whilst sweating together) and studies show couples who work out together are happier in their relationship.

partner wall sit

4. It's a confidence boost

You're more likely to venture into that intimidating weights section of the gym, or try a new fitness class if you've got a friend with you for moral support.

5. It's fun!

You can definitely have a giggle with your mate during exercise, even if you're simply cracking a strained sweaty smile during a spin class.

So there you have it; pop on your gym kit, grab a buddy and enjoy your workout!

Why Choose The Best Fit Kit?

Wearing the right fit kit isn't just about looking good on Instagram (although admittedly,  I have been guilty of that) but actually, paying attention to simple details like which workout clothes to wear, helps to keep you focused on what is most important at that time – the workout. That is why I have teamed up with New Balance to giveaway one of my lucky readers the chance to WIN a New Balance outfit worth over £160, so keep reading.

New Balance Night Floral Bra

During exercise you should wear practical clothing that you are comfortable in and supports your body in a way that can aid and even enhance your performance during workouts. All of that sounds a bit boring but it doesn't have to be, especially if you find a bold print or bright colour that looks good enough to boost your body confidence at the same time.

New Balance Night Floral Top

When I go to the gym I may well do a HIIT training session followed by a yoga class to get a deeper post workout stretch. Two completely different workouts requiring varied performance functionalities. One outfit (HIIT training) requires more sweat wicking material and the other (yoga) needs to enable you to move freely, in order to do those all important stretches.

Yoga outfit New Balance

Fortunately I've discovered a great range from New Balance that ticks all of my boxes; the New Balance Night Floral performance leggings, top and sports bra (as seen above). They each come in different styles and colours to suit all, have a flattering fit, subtle mesh insets for breathability and are made from material that wicks sweat away fast.

NB Studio Skins

They are perfect for sweat inducing workouts such as HIIT and because the material is so lightweight and comfortable, it even doubles up as a great yoga outfit. The bra offers medium support and is long enough to wear on it's own as a crop top and they even have matching studio skins, which offer great grip and cushioning on the balls of your feet, allowing you to twist, turn and leap in studio based classes with greater ease and comfort.

Top 3 Foam Roller Moves

Work hard and sometimes, rest harder. Did you know that stretching and resting post workout is often overlooked? Yet it's an important way to avoid the risk of injury and is the quickest way to rebuild, repair and recover your muscles, enabling you to be at your best during your next workout.

I've teamed up with New Balance to share ways that you can use your rest days to the maximum and to show that running and resting really do go hand in hand. This is why I'm bringing you my top 3 Foam Roller Moves, especially essential for runners.

1. HAMSTRINGS

Hamstring movement using a foam roller

2. QUADS

Quad movement using a foam roller

3. Calves

Calve movement using foam roller

Foam rollers act as a 'self-massage' reliving muscular soreness even further and they are a great tool for the development of a more supple body. These top 3 moves are particularly great for runners as they focus on your hamstrings, quads and calves so roll on and find my step by step guide on how to do them safely by clicking here.

In this post I am wearing the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 Trainers, New Balance Racer Back Bra Top and the New Balance Printed Impact leggings.

Getting Intimate with Kit & Ace

Sometimes revealing it all in front of a person you don't know can be a nerve wracking experience, but with Kit & Ace it was a joy. Kit & Ace is a Canadian clothing brand best known for producing machine washable technical cashmere. Their pieces are simple yet beautiful and I had the pleasure of doing a shoot and interview for them. Interesting fact, the pool location we shot at is the same pool seen in the James Bond Skyfall movie. :)

Anyway, we discussed everything from my job as a TV presenter (how I broke into the industry and combat nerves) to how I came to DJ right down to fitness fads that should be avoided and tips on how to maintain a high-energy, healthy lifestyle. Check out the full interview but in the meantime, here's a peak of the photos from the shoot. Hope you like them?

Les Mills Live | London

Have you ever been a room with thousands of people who like exactly the same things as you do, moving at exactly the same time, to exactly the same music? I have, to mark the first leg of the Les Mills Live global tour.

Reebok Les Mills

If you've never heard of Les Mills, you've probably been in a class of theirs without even realising, down at your local gym.  They are the world's largest creators of choreographed exercise to music, group fitness classes; Spin class, Body Pump, GRIT Strength etc, Les Mills are responsible for.  They teamed with Reebok to get the planet fitter with a Les Mills global tour and yesterday was the first leg.

Female weight lifting

In the London ExCel Centre, I witnessed over 1000 people squatting, lunging and sweating in unison before my very eyes and it was magical. The day focused on being able to try out a variety of classes, from danced based classes like Sh' Bam, to yoga focused classes such as Body Balance, there really was something for everyone. All their classes release stress, improve confidence and gets you into amazing shape.

Les Mills Live Body Pump

There's something really empowering about being amongst thousands of people working out as one and most importantly, having fun with it. The thing I enjoyed the most is that it's not about being the fastest, the strongest or the youngest but it's a community of people of all ages and abilities spurring one another on to keep fit. It also looks frikkin' amazing to see over 1000 people doing a chest press at the same time. Such rhythm!

I was presenting for Les Mills Live to capture the energy on camera but it''s a fitness festival that really does have to be attended to be fully be appreciated, so click here to see how you can get involved and experience the contagious energy I felt yesterday.

WORKOUT WITH FRIENDS

I find that recently, the easiest way to hang out with my friends is to workout with them. We meet up, exercise for an hour before catching up over a healthy post workout breakfast or lunch before going about our business. It's the best! Here I am with my friend Tasha Green doing wall-sits...

Modelling For adidas A/W15

OK so adidas have chosen three females to model key pieces of their new Autumn/Winter 2015 training collection and I'm one of them. Needless to say this pleases me.

Ever since I was a little girl I've enjoyed adidas. From the adidas poppers that exposed my naked legs to the harsh winds of Blackburn, Lancashire, to the adidas Gallaxy football boots that I remember my older brother saving up for, only for me to be the annoying little sister and unscrew the studs before misplacing them. Quite literally, adidas is a brand that I have grown up with and so naturally, I'm excited to be working with them.

I'm passionate about all areas of fitness and promoting a healthy body image for females and the new collection from adidas certainly adds to that confident feeling you get from working out. It also shows off my individual style. Bright colours and matching two pieces? Yes please! Activewear that not only looks good but performs well.

Shooting the look book and modelling this range was so much fun and as well as flaunting my stuff,  I have created a bespoke series of instructional workout videos with adidas too, the first of which goes live on Tuesday 30th June right here. This is for their #WorkIt summer campaign, which aims to encourage women across the UK to try out fresh fitness moves so expect fun, energy boosting workouts that incorporate dynamic and explosive exercises.

Hold tight for more exciting news as you could be in with a chance of getting your hands on this amazing fit kit and whilst you're holding, tell me which items you are looking forward to getting your paws on?

To get involved and access the free workouts head to Facebook and like the adidas Women page

The brand new AW15 Women’s Training collection is available here. Don't forget to check out my adidas girl gang Cat Meffan and Em Sheldon.

Lots of adidas shaped love from AJ Odudu
