The London Marathon 2017 | Race Day Tips and Nervous Energy

Tomorrow, at 10am, I’m running the London Marathon. I genuinely thought at this point I’d be casually soaking myself in a nice hot bath and stuffing my face with a bag of spuds. Instead I woke up after 4 hours sleep, feeling overwhelming tired (naturally), nervous and teary.

London Marathon 2017 adidas

I've had recurring bad dreams where I am not allowed to run because I've lost my race number. That no one’s there to cheer me on and that Banana Man tripped me up! I'm asking myself how will I cope with massive highs and crashing lows, how will I tell myself to carry on when the voice on my shoulder is telling me to stop and why on Earth did I ever volunteer to do such a thing?! If you are feeling the same, it’s time to block out the negative voices, trust in the training you have done and realise that Banana Man doesn’t actually exist.

London Marathon 2017 Training

My friend James advised me “don’t let your head undo all your hard work”, Adrienne tells me “relax and put one foot in front of the other, the same way we always have”, Hayley says “see it as another long training run” and Alice says, “I’ll see you on the finish line with a big bottle of gin!” Even though my friends pearls of wisdom hasn’t completely stopped the butterflies, thankfully, they are calming me down.

All in all, training for my first marathon has definitely been a mixed bag.  Though I’m sure once I cross that finish line and stop to reflect on the hard work I’ve put in, holding a champagne flute in one hand and my medal in the other, I’ll look at that same bag as nothing but a bag of goodies. So for the rest of the day I vow to only be concerned about the things I can take full control of. Let’s do this together!

London Marathon Race Day Tips

Plan Your Race Day Travel To Start

Get to the race in good time to drop your bag off, have multiple nervous trips to the loo and find your race pen.

  • Red numbers start at Greenwich or Maze Hill

  • Green at Maze Hill

  • Blue at Blackheath

Bag drop closes at 9:30am sharp and the only bag you're able to leave is the clear bag you were given your race number in.

Race Day Outfit

Tomorrow is not the day to try new things that may cause discomfort. Wear what you've been training in or that you have ran in comfortably before.

Take a layer of outerwear that you're happy to dispose of just before you race. This will be collected and given to charity.

What To Eat

Hydrate by drinking 350-500ml of liquid 3- 4 hours before race time and then 250ml 45 mins before.

Eat a high carb breakfast 3-4 hours before. This could be porridge with milk and a banana or toast, honey and yoghurt or eggs on toast. Whatever you're used to eating before a long run.

1 hour before start have a carb rich snack such as a banana, or a bar or gel. As long as you're used to eating it.

RUN!

In the wise words of my friend Adrienne, move forward and do what we’ve been doing for yonks. Let’s go!

Tell yourself you are ready you can do this and that the nervous energy you feel really is excitement...in disguise.

If you want to track my run download the official 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon app or cheer me on from the side lines. My race number is 56471. You can also follow my Instagram Story along the way @AJOdudu

Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony

It's been four years since London hosted the 2012 Olympic Games and how awesome was that?! The Spice Girls performed whilst riding around on top of black cabs, there were hundreds of hospital beds being pushed around by NHS staff and Emeli Sande wowed everyone.

Sir Paul McCartney graced the stage, J.K Rowling read an extract from Peter Pan and the actual Queen appeared in a scene with James Bond! Not to forget the passing of the torch between David Beckham and Sir Steve Redgrave plus, the athletes parade.  Our Opening Ceremony was absolutely bonkers but undoubtedly brilliant.

Olympic Park London

Practically, London transport links improved, run down areas were given a make over and generally, people in London seemed happy and carefree. To top it all off, Team GB had their most successful Olympics since 1908, receiving a whopping sixty-five medals. *Go us!*

Team GB DFS

Today, the feeling in Britain is still one of pride which is why this year, there are eleven Olympic Fanzones across the UK, where you can watch the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in a fun and atmospheric environment for free. One of the Fanzones is of course the Olympic Park in London, where I was the official host for Team GB Facebook Live, to celebrate the launch of these areas and the start of Rio 2016.

Fanzone Olympic Park London

Rio showcased a great opening ceremony with scenes of dance and expression throughout, so I'm really excited to not only get behind Team GB but also, to support the Rio Olympics as a whole.

You can show your support too and find your nearest Fanzone by clicking here, remembering to keep an eye on my Twitter and Instagram for daily updates. So without further ado, let the games begin.

Modelling For adidas A/W15

OK so adidas have chosen three females to model key pieces of their new Autumn/Winter 2015 training collection and I'm one of them. Needless to say this pleases me.

Ever since I was a little girl I've enjoyed adidas. From the adidas poppers that exposed my naked legs to the harsh winds of Blackburn, Lancashire, to the adidas Gallaxy football boots that I remember my older brother saving up for, only for me to be the annoying little sister and unscrew the studs before misplacing them. Quite literally, adidas is a brand that I have grown up with and so naturally, I'm excited to be working with them.

I'm passionate about all areas of fitness and promoting a healthy body image for females and the new collection from adidas certainly adds to that confident feeling you get from working out. It also shows off my individual style. Bright colours and matching two pieces? Yes please! Activewear that not only looks good but performs well.

Shooting the look book and modelling this range was so much fun and as well as flaunting my stuff,  I have created a bespoke series of instructional workout videos with adidas too, the first of which goes live on Tuesday 30th June right here. This is for their #WorkIt summer campaign, which aims to encourage women across the UK to try out fresh fitness moves so expect fun, energy boosting workouts that incorporate dynamic and explosive exercises.

Hold tight for more exciting news as you could be in with a chance of getting your hands on this amazing fit kit and whilst you're holding, tell me which items you are looking forward to getting your paws on?

To get involved and access the free workouts head to Facebook and like the adidas Women page

The brand new AW15 Women’s Training collection is available here. Don't forget to check out my adidas girl gang Cat Meffan and Em Sheldon.

Lots of adidas shaped love from AJ Odudu

adidas Summer #WorkIt Series: My Shoot

Whether you’re asleep, awake, bathing or running, your body needs energy. When you’re ill your vitality is sapped. When you’re working your enthusiasm is zapped.

I personally lead a hectic lifestyle in London as a TV presenter and DJ which requires a lot of vigour. Especially as I have other interests in blogging, vlogging and of course socialising. Recently I have been lacking in the energy department but with summer just around the corner (and so much more fun to be had) I don’t want to miss out on any of the above due to me being tired or weak. So allow me to introduce you to my new energy boosting buddy; adidas.

Yep, you heard me right. I have worked with adidas to co-create a bespoke workout that is specifically designed to boost your energy as part of their #WorkIt Summer Series. I love having a spring in my step and the exercise program that I created with adidas will enable that exuberant strut.

This June, over a six week period, workout moves will be revealed weekly on the adidas Women’s Facebook page allowing you (yes you) to join me on my energy boosting, upper body strengthening fitness journey.

Whilst my exercise program is not going to be revealed until June, I’m excited to share with you some snaps from my time shooting the instructional workout videos and flaunting the adidas autumn/winter collection, in a beautiful studio in Shoreditch, London.

In person, I was kept company with two bloggers and members of the #WorkIt family, Em Sheldon and Cat Meffan (pictured with me below) and an amazing team of creatives and photographers. In my mind however, I was occupied with Missy Elliot, the rapper of one of my favourite songs of all time, Work It. How fitting!

Anyway, I’m delighted to be teaming up with adidas in the latest chapter of their #WorkIt campaign, as it aims to encourage women across London and the UK to try out fresh fitness moves. I’m proud to be apart of such a movement, and as someone who loves leading a healthy lifestyle (most of the time) I actually would encourage everyone worldwide, to get involved.

So keep your eyes peeled for images and announcements on my Twitter, Instagram and YouTube channel and you can also follow my journey by following adidas on Twitter and Instagram too. So I hope you’re ready to work it, because I know I am.

xoxo
